Historial Significance

Punjab is a state in South East Asia which in 1947 was divied in half to West Punjab, which is in Pakistan and East Punjab which is now in India.  Punjab has five rivers and that is how it gets is name.

Meaning: Punjabi is the language spoken in Punjab.  Punjab was divided in 2 during partition in 1947 and half is now in India and the other half in Pakistan.  In East Punjab (in India), it is written in Gurmukhi script and in West Punjab (in Pakistan), it is written in Shahmukhi script.   The Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikhs is written in Gurmukhi.
