Guru Gobind Singh ji in 1697 AD chose the new year day (1-Chet) to play games of valor and defense preparedness. Holla-Mohalla, ਹੋਲਾ-ਮਹੱਲਾ, originates from words halla-mohalla (ਹੱਲਾ-ਮਹੱਲਾ) - meaning to raid the encampment, ਮਹੱਲੇ 'ਤੇ ਹੱਲਾ ਬੋਲਣਾ। It also signifies the beginning of spring (Basant). It so happened that in 1697 holi (celebrated on the full-moon of Phaggan) was just a day before. Thus the association persisted despite being unrelated.
--Mool Nanakshahi Calendar observes/preserves this event on 1-Chet. Which will always occur on March - 14th every year.
--All 12 months of the Nanakshahi Calendar are based on Gurbani.
